Amboseli is a unique place. The first time I travelled there and saw it I had the impression it was nothing special, a place with lots of dust, not much vegetation and not so much wildlife action. I was completely wrong. But it’s necessary to spend enough time on the field, get supported by experience guides, be patience, have perseverance and work really much. That evening there was not much time left to get dark and the time to drive back to the lodge was getting closer. After many hours driving, completely exhausted, dirty covered by dust, and trying to find the elephants with no success…., my guide Juma spotted a small group of them crossing a dusty plain in the direction to the bushes. There was not much time and light, but plenty of wind and dust in the air. But moreover the sun was getting low really fast and its sunbeams crossing a cloudy broken sky. The drama was there…. and quickly decided to make a silhouette photo of the herd. The broken sky provided a unique canvas, the dust in the air made the sunbeams more relevant in the scene, and the elephants under the last sun light made my day. A soulful photograph with plenty of atmosphere. It was worth to work so hard to get it.
