The Cross

from €7,000.00

One of the most epic action I have ever photographed is the cross of the dry lake in Amboseli by a herd of elephants. It is certainly not very frequent any more due to a number of factors. And it is even more rare to see a  large one. The place is certainly magic, and eventually you can feel the fresh air and the sun on your face while other wild animals are not far away. Once the herd starts crossing it is important to take rapid decisions for making the photograph. The light direction, the background, the chances to get close to them without altering their behavior… It is important to decide fast on the desired composition and move quickly. On that particular morning Raymond and I spotted this herd from the distance and having appreciated the beautiful texture of the sky, the number of the elephants and the changing sun light projection over the ground due to the moving clouds I decided to make a contextual photo to illustrate and convey the feeling of the large open space, peace and freedom, and the slow walk of the elephants over this unique plain. I had the time to frame and choose the composition, and then I waited till the clouds blocked the light over the ground just in front the the elephants, to get this natural contrast and beauty. This is one of my favorite photographs of that expedition.
